VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is moving ahead with BEACONSAT, its first military satellite and the largest satellite developed in the country. The spacecraft will monitor interference affecting global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit. Its instruments will focus on jamming and spoofing involving services such as GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch the roughly 32-kilogram satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

The mission will examine where navigation signals face disruption and provide data for military use and technical analysis. Jamming uses radio interference to weaken or block signals that receivers need for accurate positioning. Spoofing introduces false signals that can cause navigation equipment to calculate an incorrect position or time. These forms of interference can affect systems that rely on satellite navigation across aviation, shipping, transport and other sectors.
The Austrian Defence Ministry is treating BEACONSAT as a technology demonstration within the country’s expanding military space program. The satellite will test methods for identifying navigation interference from orbit and collecting information about affected areas. Officials have linked the project to Austria’s work on satellite navigation, communications and space-based reconnaissance. The ministry adopted a military space strategy in 2023 that sets out development goals extending through 2035 and beyond.
Satellite combines Austrian and European technology
GATE Space leads the BEACONSAT project and supplies its propulsion system, structure and thermal management technology. The Austrian company began in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien and specializes in spacecraft propulsion. Its propulsion technology has completed more than 8,000 hot-fire tests under atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project also received about 750,000 euros in Austrian public support for technology development.
Other specialists provide systems needed for the satellite’s navigation-monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN contributes technology designed to detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional spacecraft hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency also supports the project through its Marketplace program, which helps technology demonstration missions test commercially developed space systems in operational settings.
Launch will open Austria’s first military satellite mission
BEACONSAT will concentrate on gathering interference data rather than carrying weapons or performing an offensive role. The spacecraft will monitor signals from orbit and identify patterns linked to jamming and spoofing. Project information released in 2026 put the Defence Ministry’s contribution at roughly 1 million euros. The mission is expected to begin after deployment in 2027 and initially operate as a research and technology demonstration program.
Austria expects the February 2027 launch to mark the start of its first military satellite mission. SpaceX will carry BEACONSAT into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 as part of the announced launch plan. Once deployed, the satellite will collect information about disruptions affecting satellite navigation services and transmit mission data for analysis. The program gives Austria an orbital platform dedicated to studying GNSS interference while testing space technology developed for military and security applications.
