Expanded euro area shapes 2026 data coverage
The euro area has included 21 countries since Bulgaria adopted the single currency on Jan. 1, 2026. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member composition. Figures from January 2026 cover the enlarged currency area. The European Union statistical system uses a chain-index formula when euro area membership changes. That approach allows the inflation series to reflect the current composition while maintaining continuity across earlier reporting periods.
Eurostat will publish the complete harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The next flash estimate, covering September inflation, is scheduled for Oct. 2. The harmonised index tracks changes in prices households pay for consumer goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices with the same month one year earlier. Monthly inflation measures the change from the immediately preceding month, providing a separate view of short-term price movement across the euro area.
